Appalachia Service Project

Calvary possesses a rich heritage in missions activities. Tex Evans, the founder of the Appalachia Service Project, was a member of Calvary when he began his outreach to the people of Appalachia.  Calvary's youth have participated in this rewarding ministry since its inception 29 years ago. In the mountains of East Tennessee, the Carolinas, Virginia and West Virginia, the need is often painfully obvious: Inadequate housing that has failed the test of time. Helping the folks of Appalachia rebuild their homes has become the highlight of all of the youth activities at Calvary. Having left a new friend with a safe and comfortable home, these youth return stronger, wiser and more aware of the importance of God's presence in their lives.

Calvary:
Every Member
in Mission

Community Care Fellowship
This day shelter for the homeless and poor of the Nashville community began in 1994. This shelter allows people to take a shower, wash clothes and get fed. An average of 30,000 people are served each year. Many Sunday School classes donate money, time and items in support of this local mission. Calvary contacts: Pat Charron. To volunteer, call Community Care at 227-1953. The Community Care web site is http://www.ccf-mjnistry.org.

Unity Build for Habitat

It is easy to believe in the powers of God and love when a completed house rises from a vacant lot in just four weekends. With Habitat for Humanity, this miracle occurs often around the country and Calvary has joined hands with other churches and businesses in Nashville to ensure it occurs here. It is called the Unity Build.

Calvary’s participation with Habitat began in 1994 while looking for an opportunity to provide members a way to participate in missions
right in our own community. That effort resulted in Calvary sponsoring one house in a five house Habitat build on land donated by Hobson United Methodist Church in east Nashville. That build drew tremendous support from all ages in the congregation from the children bringing nails to Sunday School, to teenagers building the shed, and to ladies baking/ freezing sweet breads and cookies to help with food needs. Calvary raised $29,000 to build that first house.

With such a successful build and so much enthusiasm generated, there was no doubt Calvary wanted to build another house the following year. However, raising the funds would be a challenge, so we explored with other churches in the area the possibility of partnering on a build. Thus the name “Unity Build” was born—churches joining together to fund and build a Habitat House when it would be difficult for them to make that commitment on
their own.

Room In The Inn

Homelessness remains one of the largest problems in the U.S. At Calvary, we address homelessness with direct action. In conjunction with other Nashville churches, we host homeless individuals one night each week from November through March during the cold weather months. One night each week, Calvary volunteers and members of Nashville's homeless community share a meal, fellowship and warm shelter at the church.

Our Estonia Connections

Calvary is a connecting congregation with the Ruusmae Methodist Church in the village of Ruusamae, Estonia. This is a program through Methodist World Evangelism which connects two congregations who commit to the building of a relationship through prayer, the exchange of news, financial support, and opportunities for members to meet each other. This is a new relationship and we are excited to see how it will grow! We have also established a partnership with the Agape Methodist Church in Parnu, Estonia; having hosted their Children's Choir in May of 2000, and sending members on a work team there in 1998. The Calvary-Agape partnership is growing.

The Baltic Methodist Seminary

Calvary supports two students at the Baltic Methodist Theological Seminary in Tallin, Estonia. Through the Kuum Scholarship and Onego Scholarship programs of the Seminary, we are currently supporting Anneli Lausson. Financial gifts may also be given to help complete the building of the Baltic Mission Center, which houses the Seminary.

Volunteers in Mission (VIM)

Floods, hurricanes, or any place human beings have needs, are the destinations of this group of Calvary volunteers. V.I.M. has volunteered its efforts for everything from disaster relief in the U.S. to helping build a mission dormitory in Uganda. Members have sent medical teams to Central America and have helped renovate a church in Nashville. To be a member of the team, one only has to have the desire to help others in need.
